Ten of Singapore’s historical buildings will shine with patriotic glory every night this month to celebrate the city-state’s independence. 

The Asian Civilisations Museum, National Gallery Singapore, National Museum of Singapore and Victoria Concert Hall are among those to be bathed in red and white light projections in part to show solidarity with the arts community, which has struggled during the COVID-19 pandemic. 

“The 10 buildings have been integral to nation-building, our achievements and our values as a country, and represent different chapters in Singapore’s story. They will be illuminated in red and white, the colours of Singapore’s National Flag, from 23 July to 30 August in a show of unity across the arts and culture sector, and to encourage and inspire Singaporeans this National Day,” an announcement said. 

The effort was initiated by the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth, Arts House Limited, Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay, National Gallery Singapore and the National Heritage Board. 

The National Gallery, which houses the world’s largest public collection of modern Southeast Asian art, will also project 60 works by local artists onto its facade. 

At the National Museum, this year’s National Day campaign slogan, “Together, A Stronger Singapore,” will be projected onto the building in four languages. The domes of The Esplanade theatre will feature the iconic Lion Head symbol and be lit in hues of red and white as well as blue and lavender to commemorate the start Mid-Autumn season, which is celebrated by the Chinese community by feasting on lotus paste desserts, or mooncakes.

Over at The Arts House, Singaporean artist Troy Chin will showcase a digital installation of past works including comic book series The Resident Tourist. Visitors can also check out an exhibition of the popular children’s series Sherlock Sam and the Supper Club by Singaporean writer A.J. Low and illustrator Drewscape.

All buildings are lit 7:30pm to midnight except for the National Gallery Singapore, The Arts House and Victoria Theatre, which begin at 7pm.
