Sabah student who climbed tree for internet receives scholarship

University Malaysia Sabah, or UMS, awarded Veveonah Mosibin with a scholarship yesterday, weeks after a video of the student climbing a tree for Wi-Fi signal to do her exams turned her into an internet sensation.聽

UMS vice-chancellor Taufiq Yap Yun Hin announced the scholarship award on his page. It will allow the 19-year-old student to pursue a bachelor鈥檚 degree at the university.聽

鈥淲ith great pleasure, UMS will be awarding a scholarship to Veveonah Mosibin who is completing her Foundation in Science program and will move on to pursue a bachelors degree at our university,鈥 the caption said. 鈥淰eveonah is a smart student and has always been proactive during her foundation studies. May she succeed in her university journey. Congratulations, Veveonah!鈥

The post has been shared more than 800 times on Facebook with many joining in the comments to congratulate Veveonah.

The student and her parents were also invited to the Sabah state palace in Kota Kinabalu to meet the wife of the head of state, Norlidah R.M. Jasni, who is also the advisor of the . Norlidah will reportedly donate money and daily essentials to Veveonah and her family.聽

Veveonah said she aspires to be a teacher someday, listing her parents among her sources of inspiration.聽

Earlier this month, Veveonah filmed herself climbing a tree in the Sapatalang Pitas village where she lives, more than 200 kilometers away from the state capital of Sabah, in search of a Wi-Fi signal so she could take her online exams. The video has scooped up more than half a million views ever since.聽

Last week, the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission has also made plans to build a telco tower near the village to widen the internet coverage in the area.
