Thailand鈥檚 overnight curfew may be revoked 15 days: army brass

A top military commander said the overnight curfew may be suspended 15 days to test the waters.聽

Officials were meeting this morning to consider lifting the 11pm-3am national curfew this morning at the Government House, Gen. Nattapol Nakpanit, deputy army chief, said today.

If approved by the COVID-19 task force and the government, Nattapol said, checkpoints would be remove and no people arrested for leaving their residences during the proscribed hours. The curfew would be halted for 15 days for evaluation and gathering feedback, according to Nattapol.

The proposal is to see if it is no longer necessary for preventing COVID-19 infections. In the past two weeks, the only new confirmed cases were detected in Thais returning from abroad.聽

Nattapol said the state of emergency, which grants near absolute power to authorities to enact measures deemed necessary, will remain in place.聽
