An unidentified Singaporean woman, who may have mental health issues, is under investigation for a series of hateful tweets targeting Malays.
The police told reporters today that they were investigating the 27-year-old woman for allegedly stoking racial divisions on social media under the name Matilda Lee. In a series of recent tweets following Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong鈥檚 controversial National Day address, she condemned the Malay community, including its dominant religion and language.聽
“Is it really fucking necessary to say it in Malay language? We only have 3 important languages in SG, Chinese, Tamil and English. I don鈥檛 like the comments section like you think we [S]ingaporeans LIKE or want o hear it in your FUCKING MALAY LANGUAGE?!鈥 she wrote in a now-deleted tweet.
But while she posts under a Chinese surname, the police said she is Malay herself.
Singapore has been gripped by a seeming rise of interracial enmity along with growing frustration with the perceived privilege enjoyed by its Chinese residents. In his comments Sunday, Lee disappointed those calling for greater equality by flat out denying that Chinese privilege exists.聽
Anyone fearing that would embolden discrimination against Malays might be unsurprised by the tweets which followed.
鈥淚 don鈥檛 even give a fuck about the Malay community in Singapore and I don鈥檛 care about the Muslim Community in Singapore. We only want peace here NOT headache or bullshit from the Malays in Singapore here,鈥 another of the woman鈥檚 tweets read.
The police said they established her identity later Sunday after a complaint was filed.
If found guilty, she faces up to three years in jail and a fine.
