For the first time in its history, the Formula One race was canceled Friday due to the logistics of building the circuit under restrictions imposed to contain COVID-19.

It takes months to construct the track, according to promoter Singapore GP and Formula One, and the ongoing restrictions make it impossible to hold the event set for September.聽

鈥淲e are therefore unable to complete the race circuit infrastructure in time for the race to take place,鈥 it said in a statement, noting that construction usually starts in May.聽

It also pointed out that large gatherings continue to be banned and travel restricted around the world.聽

Existing ticketholders will receive automatic refunds within 30 business days, or if preferred, an option to rollover their tickets to next year鈥檚 event.
