An opposition pol who gained stardom for his eccentric performance in the 2020 elections is now minting an NFT career.
In a bid to raise S$200,000 to pay legal fees stemming from charges he degraded homophobic Christians among others, Charles Yeo yesterday released 660 simplistic NFTs.
鈥淚 am appealing for your help if you feel that I did not do anything wrong other than speak up for just causes which threaten the [People鈥檚 Action Party鈥檚] grip of power,鈥 he late last night.
Sticking to his brand as a meme generator, the collection all consists of 2D, meme-style images. Most featured his face with messages like 鈥淔ugly and unfappable,鈥 鈥淭yrant of love鈥 and 鈥淎nti-fascist super saiyan.鈥
So far, the collection has been traded by seven users and was valued at US$51.54 (S$70) as of this morning. Yeo wrote early this morning saying that 1% of the collection has been sold.
The former chairman of Reform Party in January was charged with six counts for calling a police officer in November 2020 a 鈥減athetic coward and collaborator with an authoritarian regime鈥 who should be 鈥渢ortured before execution鈥 in social media posts, and slinging insults at 鈥渞adical and dogmatic鈥 homophobic Christians.
The 31-year-old was also arrested in January and is facing investigation for alleged forgery at his law firm Whitefield Law Corp., where he works as a criminal defense lawyer. Police said this was based on reports from the firm鈥檚 clients. He was freed on a S$35,000 bond.
As a result, Yeo鈥檚 party announced he was stepping aside temporarily.
Yeo said those issues, plus other personal legal troubles relating to his representation of two defendants in death penalty cases 鈥渆asily鈥 add up to around S$150,000 to S$200,000.
