UPDATE: Political artist Fahmi Reza investigated for slander over 鈥楧r. Adham鈥 drawing: police
Police have summoned political artist and activist Fahmi Reza for questioning tomorrow over past social media posts.聽
Fahmi, 44, posted a photo of the police letter online today, saying that he was expected to go to the station in Putrajaya to give a statement in relation to complaints against some of his works that were posted to social media. The note did not specify which artwork the police were investigating although it did indicate that police reports were filed against him in October and February.
鈥淚 received a notice from the Criminal Investigations Department in Putrajaya to give a statement regarding two police complaints on my posts or graphics on social media,鈥 Fahmi said on Instagram, adding: 鈥淭hey鈥檝e asked me to be present at the Putrajaya police headquarters at 11am tomorrow.鈥
He said: 鈥淎ccording to the police, I鈥檓 being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act.鈥澛
The law is supposed to be applied to 鈥渙bscene鈥 or 鈥渋ndecent鈥 communication materials with the intention to threaten or harass. Fahmi said the police did not tell him which works of art he would be questioned for.
鈥淭he police did not disclose which two posts or graphics they are referring to,鈥 he wrote. 鈥淏ased on the dates corresponding to the report number in the notice I received, they could be referring to posts or graphics from February 2021 and October 2020.鈥
Fahmi is known for targeting politicians in his satirical works of art. He previously drew Najib Razak in clownface during the former鈥檚 reign in 2016. Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin has not been spared from Fahmi鈥檚 art.
