Malaysia reported nearly 20,000 COVID-19 cases today, a new daily record after clocking around 15,000 infections each day in recent weeks.
Another 19,819 people have contracted COVID-19 today, according to the Health Ministry. Most of them were in Selangor, which has been the state most affected by the disease since the beginning. A total of 8,377 of today鈥檚 cases were located there, followed by Kuala Lumpur (2,467), Kedah (1,371), Johor (1,162) and Kelantan (1,003).
The remaining 11 states and federal territories recorded fewer than 1,000 new cases today, respectively.聽
Health authorities later reported another 257 deaths, which is also a record increase, bringing the death toll to 9,855. The latest numbers bring Malaysia鈥檚 total infections count to more than a million – or 1,163,291 – since the crisis began last year. Around 80% of those –聽 950,029 – have since recovered.
More than 14 million Malaysians have received at least the first dose of their vaccine since the immunization program began in February. That鈥檚 only 40% of the population.聽
