The president of the Malaysian Islamic Party, or PAS, has a special COVID-19 message for citizens this Monday – the pandemic is a test from God and that only those who follow his path can overcome the coronavirus battle.听

That was what the by Abdul Hadi Awang said before he segued into a more political tone to praise the ruling Perikatan Nasional government while throwing shade at the preceding Pakatan Harapan led by ex-leader Dr Mahathir Mohamad and those he suggested were attempting to overthrow the current government.听

鈥淥nly those who are ignorant of religion will look for weaknesses and shortcomings without offering any help to face these challenging times,鈥 he said in a this morning.

He later added: 鈥淭his includes the most developed and rich nations because whatever is happening is the will of Allah and no power can challenge His will.鈥

It is not clear what prompted Abdul Hadi鈥檚 Monday morning affirmation, but we all know that PAS is part of the Perikatan Nasional coalition and that Abdul Hadi is the member of parliament for Marang in Terengganu.听

Abdul Hadi also declared that a 鈥減olitical pandemic鈥 was taking place in Malaysia ever since Pakatan Harapan won the 2018 election. He even showed support for the downfall of that government, saying that it happened in a democratic way after a group of parliamentarians decided to return to the 鈥渞ight path鈥 by realigning their political affiliations – except that nobody asked for that to happen.听

鈥淭hey won with the help of social media which was funded to spread lies and fake news. They then set up a government which was not only liberal but also dared to challenge the position of Islam and the Royalty. The LGBT community also started making demands freely,鈥 Abdul Hadi said.

鈥淎fter having failed in their attempt by copying the Perikatan Nasional method of collecting statutory declarations, their attempts to table no-confidence motions also failed. Up till now, they have not stopped and are continuing with their efforts,鈥 he added.听

Abdul Hadi also thinks that Malay rulers should be kept out of politics.听

Malaysia is expected to resume parliament soon although the government has yet to reveal when that will happen. The country continues to report thousands of new COVID-19 cases and daily deaths in the double digits since tighter lockdown restrictions began on June 1.听
