Bangkok bombing: ‘Backpack man’ officially confirmed as suspect (VIDEO)

Police are hunting for a man wearing a yellow shirt who was seen on a surveillance camera leaving his backpack inside the fence of the Erawan Shrine where last night’s deadly bombing occurred in downtown Bangkok.

National police chief Pol. Gen. Somyot Poompanmoung confirmed this afternoon the man in the viral CCTV footage is being pursued as the main suspect responsible for the bombing that killed at least 20 and injured over a hundred others at Rajaprasong Junction.

A massive manhunt has been now ordered and all airports and border checkpoints are on alert for the suspect.

In the footage, the backpack man is seen casually sitting down inside the fence of Erawan Shrine before freeing his bag from his shoulders and leaving it on the ground. He then stands up before slowly walking away from the shrine, looking at his mobile phone and carrying a plastic bag.

Minutes later, the explosion occurred.

Somyot said the suspect escaped using a motorbike taxi onto Silom road. He has encouraged the motorcycle driver in question to contact the authorities, adding that the man is the only suspect at the moment.

The nationality of the suspect has not been confirmed, reported.
